The Douro Valley Train Does Not Start Where You Think it Starts

You have seen the photographs of Porto's São Bento station, a cathedral of hand painted azulejo tiles, and you have assumed that is where you board the Douro Line train into the terraced wine country. That assumption is wrong. The trains that follow the Douro River east to Pinhão and Pocinho depart from Campanhã station. Not São Bento. Understanding that distinction before you arrive saves you the frustration of standing on the wrong platform while your train rolls out of the city without you.

Campanhã is Porto's main long distance and rail hub. São Bento is a terminal station for urban and suburban services, a beautiful but functionally limited building. The Douro Line's famous scenic section between Pinhão and Pocinho begins only after you have changed trains at Campanhã. The two stations are just 2.5 km apart. A shuttle runs between them every 5 to 15 minutes depending on the time of day, operated by Comboios de Portugal. The fare for that short ride falls between €1.35 and €2.25 for a single ticket in 2025, but if you already hold a valid long distance ticket for the Douro Line for the same day, the shuttle transfer is included at no extra cost. Budget for that ticket at the machine, not at the counter. The machines accept cash and card, but have coins ready for the Andante card deposit if you buy a local fare.

Why São Bento is Still Worth Your Morning

Inside the Tile Hall

Arrive at São Bento at least 40 minutes before your intended departure. Spend the first 20 inside the station itself. The main hall holds roughly 20,000 azulejo tiles installed between 1905 and 1916 by the artist Jorge Colaço. They cover about 551 square metres of wall surface and depict historical scenes including the Battle of Valdevez, the arrival of King John I and Philippa of Lancaster, and scenes of rural Portuguese life. Stand in the centre of the hall and turn slowly. This is not a museum you pay to enter. It is a working station you walk through for free.

The Port Lodge Detour

After you have seen the tiles, walk the 15 to 20 minutes across the upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia. The riverfront there holds roughly 50 port lodges, most offering tastings that run 30 to 90 minutes. The fee in 2025 ranges from €10 to €40 per person depending on the lodge and the depth of the tasting. This is the efficient way to see the port lodges before you board your train. Once you are on the Douro Line heading east you will not return to Porto until evening.

What to Pack

Do not plan to eat on the train. The CP trains on the Douro Line carry no catering. No buffet car, no trolley, no snack counter. Bring water, sandwiches, and anything else you need for the 2 hour 15 minute to 2 hour 30 minute ride to Pinhão, or the 3 hour 15 minute to 3 hour 30 minute ride all the way to Pocinho. Pinhão has a few small cafes near its station where you can buy food after you arrive. The train itself is dry.

What to Know Before You Board

The CP trains serving the Douro Line do not require reservations in 2025. Buy a ticket at the station or online via cp.pt, then board any service with an open seat. The fare for Porto to Pinhão falls between €11.50 and €14.50 single, varying by train type. Porto to Pocinho runs €14.00 to €17.50 single. These are not the tourist oriented luxury carriages. They stop at small stations along the way. Locals use them for daily travel. You will share your carriage with commuters, students, and farmers.

The most dramatic scenery begins after Pinhão, on the section between Pinhão and Pocinho. If you only have time for a half day trip, ride to Pinhão, spend an hour walking along the river and looking at the tile covered station there, then catch a return train. If you have the full day, continue to Pocinho, the eastern terminus of the line. The journey from Porto to Pocinho takes roughly 3 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes. The return trip is the same length. That is a full day committed to the train. It is worth every minute of it.

The Practical Start of Your Douro Adventure

Check the Timetable the Night Before

The single most important thing you can do to get this right is check the schedule on cp.pt the night before. The Douro Line has limited departures, especially outside peak season. Some trains run only a few times per day. Miss the morning service and you may wait hours for the next one. The CP website publishes the 2025 schedule in full. Print it or screenshot it. Do not rely on Google Maps alone, which sometimes mislabels the departure station for these services.

Luggage and the Return

If you are travelling with a suitcase, leave it at your hotel. The trains have overhead racks but no dedicated luggage storage. The stations at Pinhão and Pocinho are small and lack baggage services. Pack a day bag. Keep your hands free for the stairs at Campanhã, which has no lift to every platform.

One final note on the return. The shuttle from Campanhã back to São Bento runs until late evening, but the last Douro Line train returning from Pinhão or Pocinho arrives at Campanhã well before midnight. Confirm the return timetable when you buy your outward ticket. You do not want to be stranded at Campanhã after the last shuttle has departed. The metro connects Campanhã to central Porto via Line D and bus lines, but a direct train back to São Bento is simpler.

Arrive at São Bento by 08:30. See the tiles. Walk the bridge to Gaia for a port lodge tasting. Shuttle to Campanhã by 10:30. Board the train to Pinhão. Do that, and the Douro Valley unfolds exactly as you hoped it would.
