Belgian Train Delays and What Happens to Your Connection and Your SNCB Ticket
Belgian train delays on SNCB do not invalidate your ticket for the next service, but compensation depends on the delay length and whether a cross-border operator is involved.
Belgian Train Delays and What Happens to Your Connection and Your SNCB Ticket
Belgian train delays matter most when the next train is international or the last connection of the night.
A SNCB train runs late, and you watch the departure board for your connection tick down. The rule is straightforward: a standard single or Multi Pass ticket stays valid on the next available service. No rebooking. No queue at a counter. The operator’s rules on ticket validity, compensation thresholds, and what happens when a delay snaps a cross-border itinerary are specific. Here they are, including the moments where the system stops working.
SNCB Delay Compensation: When You Qualify and How Much You Get
SNCB pays compensation for a domestic delay starting at 60 minutes. Under the 2026 rules, you get 50 percent of the single fare for a hold-up of 60 to 119 minutes, and 100 percent for 120 minutes or more. The operator sets a minimum payout, published in the SNCB Conditions of Carriage and the SNCB Passenger Rights Charter. SNCB revises these figures periodically; check sncb.be for the current schedule before you file.
For a Rail Pass or Standard Multi Pass, the arithmetic changes. A delay of 60 minutes or more earns one free travel credit, credited to your account. Season ticket holders get 1/365 of the annual subscription price per qualifying delay, paid out annually and only if the total exceeds the minimum payout threshold.
How To File A Claim
Fill out the SNCB Standard Delay Compensation Form at sncb.be, or call the SNCB Contact Centre on +32 2 528 28 28. You need proof of the delay. Acceptable proof: a delay certificate from sncb.be/delay-certificate using your travel date and ticket reference, a screenshot of the SNCB app showing the real-time hold-up, written confirmation from station staff or the train manager, or an official delay statement from the operator responsible for the delayed leg on a through ticket involving other carriers. Secure the evidence before you leave the station.
Missed Connection Belgium Train: What Your Ticket Covers
A missed connection on Belgian rail hinges on one distinction: through ticket or separate tickets. A through ticket is a single contract covering the entire route, including non-SNCB legs, sold as one transaction. If you hold one and a delay makes you miss your connection, your ticket remains valid on the next available service to your final destination. Board the next train. No rebooking required.
Separate tickets are two or more independent contracts for consecutive legs, not sold as a single transaction. Say you bought a ticket from Brussels Midi to Antwerp Central and another from Antwerp Central to Liège-Guillemins. The first SNCB train arrives late at Antwerp. The missed second leg is not a delay on either contract. You hold no compensation claim for the missed connection. You must buy a new ticket for the second leg. The only exception is the last train guarantee, described below.
SNCB Passenger Rights: Last Train Guarantee and Cross Border Rules
SNCB passenger rights include a last train guarantee. If your valid through ticket or domestic SNCB trip uses the scheduled last connection of the day and a SNBC delay causes you to miss it, SNBC arranges alternative transport, a taxi or a replacement bus, to your final destination. If alternative transport cannot be arranged, SNBC provides overnight accommodation up to a cap of 150 euro per night, per the 2026 Passenger Rights Charter. Contact SNBC station staff before the last connection departs, or call the SNBC Contact Centre at +32 2 528 28 28 if the station is unstaffed. The Contact Centre operates Monday to Friday 07:00 to 21:30, Saturday to Sunday and public holidays 08:00 to 21:30, Belgian local time. You can also reach SNBC through @SNCB on X or Facebook Messenger during those hours.
Cross Border Journeys: Eurostar And ICE
For international through tickets, compensation is governed by CIV uniform rules under Appendix A to COTIF. The minimum delay for compensation is 60 minutes. The CIV rate is 25 percent of the international fare for 60 to 119 minutes and 50 percent for 120 minutes or more, with a minimum payout per CIV Article 32, 2026 edition. These rules apply only to through tickets sold as a single contract. If you hold a separate ticket from London to Brussels Midi on Eurostar and a separate SNBC ticket from Brussels Midi to Ghent Sint-Pieters, a Eurostar delay does not trigger SNBC compensation for the missed domestic leg. Eurostar and ICE tickets carry their own delay and rebooking policies, separate from SNBC rules.
Belgium Rail Disruption: Engineering Works and Replacement Buses
Planned engineering works and the disruption they cause are published daily on the SNBC app journey planner and at sncb.be/timetable-works. The works list is updated daily. Check the app the morning you travel, not the night before. Replacement buses run on many disrupted routes. They do not always wait for a tight connection. A train held up15 minutes may still connect to the next train; a train held up15 minutes while a replacement bus is running may not, because the bus departs on schedule regardless of incoming train delays. Build a buffer of at least 30 minutes on any itinerary that involves a replacement bus.
Platform alterations are announced via station announcements and the SNBC app. At major stations, Brussels Midi, Antwerp Central, Liège-Guillemins, Ghent Sint-Pieters, the app is more reliable than the audio announcement, which can be inaudible in crowded concourses. The NMBS app is the same as the SNBC app; the name depends on the language setting.
The Failure Case: What to Do When the Normal Route is Closed
When a SNBC delay snaps a connection and your ticket is a separate ticket for the next leg, you have no automatic right to board the next train. Buy a new single ticket through the SNBC app or at a ticket machine. The app is faster than a queue at a staffed counter. If the delay is outside your control but not covered by a through ticket, the situation falls under force majeure. SNBC does not compensate for a missed connection on separate tickets, even if the delay was caused by a SNBC train. This is the rule that trips most travellers.
If you are stranded after the last train, and you hold a through ticket, use the last train guarantee. If you hold separate tickets, arrange your own accommodation. The refund window for an unused ticket depends on the product terms listed at sncb.be/tickets-and-railcards. Most single tickets are non-refundable once the travel date has passed. A Multi Pass journey credit can be cancelled before departure for a credit back to the pass.
The single thing that most often goes wrong here is buying separate tickets for a route that could have been a through ticket. A through ticket from Ghent Sint-Pieters to Liège-Guillemins via Brussels Midi costs the same as two singles and covers you if the Brussels connection breaks. Book through tickets whenever you change trains. Use sncb.be and choose the full itinerary, not leg by leg.
